Van den vos Reynaerde (Of the fox Reynard)
The Waasland is the home of Reynard the fox. “Of Reynard the fox” is an animal epos which is a satire on the medieval society and it is written well (a milestone in the Middle Dutch literature). Not only the different social classes (the clergy, the aristocracy, the peasants, …) are denounced , but also the medieval literature itself.
It is all a VERY long time ago (ca. 1260), but the towns of the Waasland are still under the spell of it. 13 towns (Axel, Beveren (Kieldrecht), Destelbergen, Hulst, Kruibeke, Lochristi, Lokeren, Moerbeke, St.-Gillis-Waas, St.-Niklaas, Stekene, Temse, Waasmunster ) have a common project to keep the story alive.
