Snow statues …

… are still standing up !  The snow horse became a Dalmatian and the rabbit is still OK.  The pottery lamb is already on post to be part of the garden Christmas stable scene.

My nieces (7 and 10 years old) are really into sculpting.

Van den vos Reynaerde (Of the fox Reynard)

The Waasland is the home of Reynard the fox.  “Of  Reynard the fox” is an animal epos which is a satire on the medieval society and it is written well (a milestone in the Middle Dutch literature).  Not only the different social classes (the clergy, the aristocracy, the peasants, …) are denounced , but also the medieval literature itself.

It is all a VERY long time ago (ca. 1260), but the towns of the Waasland are still under the spell of it.  13 towns (Axel, Beveren (Kieldrecht), Destelbergen, Hulst, Kruibeke, Lochristi, Lokeren, Moerbeke, St.-Gillis-Waas, St.-Niklaas, Stekene, Temse, Waasmunster ) have a common project to keep the story alive.

Picture : statue of Bruun the bear reporting to king Nobel (Noble) the lion and his queen, recreational park ‘de Ster’, St. Niklaas.

Inside the Dansing Chocola

I can count the times that I dare to go for a drink in a pub on my own on my one hand.  But after my long walk yesterday, I really got cold.  The Dansing Chocola or The holy house (Het heilig huisje) ? (both on the picture with the holy figures) The first seems a bit more inviting. Inside it is cozy and warm.  There is a light smell of toilets (let's ignore that).  I order a cup of tea : I get a mug (ancient too) with a crack in it from the top to the bottom and it is so convincing that I expect the hot water to be streaming out of the cup at the back, but it isn’t : a layer of glazing keeps the drink in the mug.  I sip at my tea on my own and look around a bit.  The feather lights spread warm colors.  People are friendly talking with each other.  Yes, this is a cozy place, but I wished I wasn’t alone.

Dansing Chocola

Dansing (dance and sing ?) Chocola (chocolate) is an ancient pub in the Kloosterstraat (Antwerp) in a very beautiful building.  Upstairs it seems empty and the cold wind blows inside through an open window.  Oh, this building really should be restored !! Make apartments in it !

Beer

And in this pedestrian tunnel : a student club (I suppose) with a beer mug around the neck and rolling a barrel of Antwerpian beer (De Coninck : "the taste of Antwerp") through the tunnel (the noise filling the air) and I turn into a tourist in my own neighborhood. Yes, this is Flanders.

I want to have the biggest ? Ik wil de grootste hebben

Advertising posters for the Christian Health Service (CM) with a famous quote of a famous Belgian singer, but what do they mean ???

Guppies

endless color combinations : beautiful !

I once was in an aquarium club and asked members what they did when they had too much fish. Never got an answer.

So, when my daughters have too much fish (guppies multiply faster than a copier can copy, so to speak), they hang notes (and so far always with success) : free guppies in nice colors, you can come and pick them up (Melsele) !  Interested ? Mail me.

Useless fact

Did you know a Belgian prohibitory sign has the same size as a bike wheel ?

Do you think road signs have the same size in different countries ?

Who did this ?!!

How do Motley parasols come to their end ? Maybe not while standing upright ? Maybe after  they spread their spores, the stipe breaks.

Motley parasol ( Grote parasolzwam, Macrolepiota procera)

A very pleasant wood is ‘de Clingse Bossen’ , just past the border in the Netherlands.  This small wood (180 ha) is the tail end of the wood ‘de Stropers’.  In the 13th century it belonged to an extended woodarea (het Koningsforeest) and that’s why these days you still can see gnomes in this wood ! (check the picture) Nice walking paths (3 and 5 km) attract a lot of visitors seeking some contact with nature and a fresh nose.

On the information board you read : specialty the Motley parasol and indeed in the grass at the parking place there they are !!  (it is typically a grassland fungus).

Or red

Also very impressive : the red colored leaves of what we call the American oak.  For the Americans themselves it is the Northern red oak (Quercus rubra).

Puddington ?

This campaign can hardly be overlooked when a lot of different posters are placed one after the other as is done in the train station of Bruges.  The effect decreases when there are less different posters and when they hang dispersed.  Both conditions are the case at the tram and bus stop in Zwijndrecht.

St. Saviour’s Cathedral Bruges

marked by fires, reconstructions, enlargements, destructions, renovations and restorations since the 10th century and so to see some windows disappeared by one of these actions.

It was because of a group of about 20 Japanese tourists that were all looking up to the tower and making pictures, that I realized how really impressive this building is.

The name in English is much easier than the one we have.  The French have it in their own language too : Cathédral St. Sauveur.

For us it is : St.Salvator’s kathedraal. Yes, we Flemings are supposed to understand  latin as well as many other languages.

Will it only be freezing inside the ice show tents this year or outside too ? I don’t know, but the rain this evening felt like icy needles.
