The finals

I restrict myself to these last photos of the Procession of the Holy Blood (Heilige Bloedprocessie, Brugge).  Don’t think you have seen it all now : there were 1750 participants so you can imagine how much there was to admire and to enjoy.

If you would like to go : next year again on Ascension day (O.L.H.-Hemelvaartsdag).

Next year there is also the Golden Tree Parade ( Gouden Boomstoet, Brugge) on Aug. 25 & 26 and that’s only every 5 years, so if you want to find out what it is that’s your chance.  I plan to go.  It is a commemoration of the royal marriage of Karel de Stoute (1433-1477) and Margareta van York.

An evocation of the medieval market and street life

and then the girl with the pink glasses standing beside me pops into the medieval scene and this time I couldn’t avoid having her in the picture, but unexpectedly …. I like the result

Oh, look …

Now she is pointing at a Roman.  Maybe it is a relative, …   Two Romans are distracted and noticeable push less hard than the others.

And no, Flemings are not brown (nor orange), it’s just that the cosmetic shop did good business.

6 / 6 / 6 : Devil’s day ?

Never heard of it before, but just to play safe : today some photos of devotion (Procession of the Holy Blood, Brugge)

The Procession consists of several parts :

  • scenes from the old testament,
  • the new testament with the evocation of the life of Christ,
  • the crusade and Diederik Van den Elzas who brings the holy blood of Christ to Bruges (1150), an evocation of the medieval everyday life (around 1150) with citizens of Bruges, members of the guilds, crusaders, market vendors, …
  • the clergymen with the shrine that keeps the ampule with the drops of the holy blood, figures of the Holy Mary,...

And today in the report of the Procession of the Holy Blood : the sheep

I mixed some sheep here and so did the shepherd.  This flock (old testament scene) consists of sheep of several breeds.   I suppose it  probably are old heritage local breeds.  There is a foundation in Flanders that stimulates the keeping of old heritage breeds instead of commercial breeds (het Steunpunt Levend Erfgoed).

And we zoom in on the father with the kids on the donkey :

The sheep of the flock below (medieval scene) probably are Black faced sheep (Zwarkopschapen).

The Procession of the Holy Blood (Brugge) is a play

So, if you represent a Roman soldier, you act as one !   You have the costumes and the whole set up of the procession (horses, wagons, …) but without the conviction with which the participants all played their role it would not look real.  And they performed well !

Let me tell you about the conditions for making photos of this event

when you have the aim to let it look as medieval as possible :

  • You have your standing place or your seat for the duration of the procession,
  • you can’t walk around,
  • you are surrounded by people,
  • your focus is small,
  • you have some short intervals that you can put a step forward on the street (if you stand on a place without crush barriers),
  • the sun turns !! (and that’s what I forgot ! I checked the sun during an exploring tour, I thought : good, the sun is behind this row of houses, but then you have to wait until the procession comes and the procession itself takes 1 ½ hour and meanwhile the sun does not stand still, of course !!! )
  • so, you have the sunlight as it is and you can’t change your position towards it
  • even if you search your standing place as good as possible : trees in the background, nice old buildings, a cobble stone street, … : a “zone 30, slow down please” poster or a red mailbox or whatever sneaks into your view, so your picture radius diminishes even more
  • the procession proceeds (of course), so not much time to adjust your camera, to focus, …
  • and also note that the weather was very changing (the brightest sunshine alternated with shadow bringing clouds)

Let me tell you, it is a real challenge, it is exciting and it is fun !

Let me also tell you that it delivered some images of knights without a head and horses without feet and that this was not due to a joust.

May 25 : The procession of the Holy Blood (Brugge)

1750 participants in the procession, 35.000 spectators, 223 photos : it was overwhelming, it exceeded my highest expectations (and I am a person of high expectations) . More later !

P.S. The colors in the pedestrian tunnel were a temporary art project of last year.  I dug it up for the photo contest about cities.
